Frequently Asked Questions
How do I order my AMI Defense Frame?
Federal law requires all 100% firearm frames to be shipped to a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer. To ensure compliance and quick fulfillment, follow one of the two options below after placing your order:
Option 1: Provide your full name along with your dealer’s business name, phone number, and city/state via our contact page. Please provide your order number with your information.
Option 2: Have your dealer email a copy of their valid FFL to: sales@amidefense.com
Be sure that your firearms dealer includes your full name and phone number so we can match your order before shipping.
What is the difference between 4140 and 17-4?
4140 is a carbon steel, and it will take to gun bluing.
17-4 is a stainless steel and will be resistant to rust right out of the box.
Do you cast, forge, or machine your parts?
All of our firearms components are cast using aerospace foundry practices and quality controls.
Are cast 1911 frames and slides as durable as a forged or machined part?
We ensure that every frame we produce is as strong, or stronger than other manufacturing methods. You can learn more about our process here, The AMI Difference.
Do your frames come with any finish options?
Our frames will come Blanchard ground with a light coating of oil for protection when shipping.
AMI Defense does not offer coatings or finishes at this time.
When you receive your frame, it will be ready for whatever finish you choose.
What size and series are your frames?
AMI Defense frames are 70 series, Government A1 models.
What is your frames weight?
Our frames are 0.75 lbs, or just under 1 pound.
Will a Commander or Officer-length slide work on this frame?
No. This frame is designed specifically for Government-length slides.
Which calibers can I build on these frames?
Designed for .45 ACP. Other calibers may be possible with advanced modification, but we recommend .45 ACP for best compatibility.
Do these frames support ramped barrels, or only standard (non-ramped) 1911 barrels?
Standard (non-ramped) barrels only. These frames do not support ramped barrel configurations.
Is this frame a single-stack design or a double-stack 1911 frame?
Single-stack. Compatible with standard 1911 magazines and grips.
Are these frames compatible with standard 1911 parts from other manufacturers?
Yes. Our frames are designed to accept standard 1911 Government-style components from most major manufacturers.
Note: Some hand fitting may be required.
Can I use a .118” keyseat cutter to cut the rails on a 1911 frame?
Yes, a 3mm (.118″) wide keyseat cutter with at least a 1/2″ diameter head should work for cutting the frame rails. This is a common setup for gunsmiths machining 1911 frames.
Note: Always verify dimensions against your specific jig and your specific setup.
How do I become a wholesaler?
Please fill out the form on our wholesale inquiry page.

Please note that all ATF rules apply when purchasing frames.
Is an FFL (Federal Firearms License) required to purchase this frame, or can it be shipped directly to me?
Yes. This is a 100% frame and must ship to a licensed FFL dealer. You or your dealer must provide a valid FFL before we can process your order.
Are the frames serialized?
Yes. All frames are serialized and must be transferred through an FFL in accordance with federal law.
Are there any state or local restrictions on buying these frames (for example, in California)?
Restrictions vary by state and locality. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure compliance with their local laws before ordering.
Do you ship 1911 frames internationally?
No. Due to export regulations, we do not ship firearm frames outside the United States.
How long does it typically take to ship and deliver the frame once ordered?
In-stock frames typically ship within 7 business days. Delivery times may vary based on your FFL’s availability.
Is there a warranty on the frame, and what does it cover?
Yes. We offer a 30-day warranty covering manufacturer defects. If your frame has a qualifying defect, AMI will cover return shipping and repair or replace the item.
Please note: the warranty does not cover errors made during the building or gunsmithing process.
What is your return or exchange policy for firearm frames and components?
If you suspect a defect, contact us first. AMI will cover shipping to receive the frame, assess the issue, and— If it qualifies as a defect—cover return shipping back to you. Returns or exchanges are not accepted for parts altered or damaged during assembly.
Can I request a custom serial number or custom engraving on the frame?
No. At this time, we do not offer custom serial numbers or engraving on frames.
Do you offer other types of 1911 frames (such as Commander size or double-stack models)?
No. Currently, we only offer Government-size single-stack 1911 A1 frames.
Can I use these AR parts in any AR-15 build, or are they specific to certain manufacturers?
Our parts follow the mil-spec standards and are broadly compatible, but due to variations across manufacturers, we recommend verifying fitment with your specific build.
Do these parts fit AR-10 rifles or only AR-15 platforms?
Our fire control groups are compatible with many AR-10 lowers, but our bolt catch is not. Please verify compatibility with your specific AR-10 platform before purchase.
What material are your AR parts made from?
All AMI Defense AR components are cast from 8620 steel.
Do I need special tools to install your triggers or fire control groups?
Basic AR-15 tools are sufficient. No proprietary jigs or specialty tools are needed.
What’s the difference between your curved and straight fire control groups?
Both offer single-stage, consistent milspec pull weights.
AMI Defense does offer a premium FCG that includes the straight trigger and an enhanced 4lb pull.
The differences between the curved and straight trigger are user preferences in finger placement, feel, and leverage.
Are your parts duty-grade or for competition?
They are designed for high-volume shooting, competitive use, and defense-grade durability.
